Professional Experience

Ronald A. Clayton is Chair of the firm’s Copyrights Practice Group.

He has practiced in the intellectual property field for over thirty years in all phases of Appellate, District Court, and inter partes Patent and Trademark Office litigation as well as trademark acquisition. He is experienced in patent, trademark, and trade secret litigation in diverse technologies and markets. Additionally, he has handled complex Patent and Trademark Office interferences, and patent procurement matters in the electronics, computer, and medical device fields. Mr. Clayton's experience also includes technology and trademark licensing, information technology transfer, and mergers and acquisitions.

His experience includes representing:

  • Medtronic against GE Medical Systems Global  Technology in an interference involving surgical navigation technology.

  • The Clearing House Payments Company against DataTreasury Corp. in connection with check imaging technology.

  • S.C. Johnson & Son against Chelsea Industries and Illinois Tool Works in connection with resealable plastic bag technology.

  • Becton Dickinson against Novo Nordisk relating to patents on 30 gauge needles for insulin injection pens.

  • Combe Incorporated against Brandwynne in connection with misappropriation of trade secrets, unfair competition, trademark infringement, false designation of origin, breach of express and implied contracts, and fraud.

  • InteliData Technologies against Portel Services in connection with smart telephone technology.

  • Colonial Data Technologies against Cybiotronics and against B.E.L.-Tronics in connection with telephone caller ID technology.

  • American Cyanamid against Dow Chemical in Interference No. 103,673 relating to assays for agriculture herbicide products.

  • Riseman v. Kobayashi in Interference No. 103,780 relating to laser beam printer technology.

  • Sherwood Medical Co. against Hake in Interference No. 103,602 relating to safety syringes.

  • American Cyanamid against United States Surgical Corp. in Interference No. 103,383, relating to deformable, absorbable surgical devices.

  • Cytec Industries Inc. against Toray Industries, Inc. in Interference No. 103,321, relating to high strength composites used, for example, in aircraft bodies.

  • American Cyanamid against 3M against United States Surgical in Interference No. 103,078 relating to surgical staplers with lockout devices.
